Viriditas — Greening Power
veer-EE-dee-tahs · Latin · Viriditas
Viriditas is Hildegard of Bingen's word for the life-giving energy that flows from the divine Word into all creation — the greening power that makes things grow, bloom, and bear fruit. It is not Greek but Latin, and it is unlike any other term in the Christian lexicon.
The Latin word viriditas derives from viridis — green, fresh, living. Hildegard uses it to describe the vitality that runs through all created things: the sap that rises in a tree, the moisture that sustains the earth, the creative energy that animates the body and the soul.
But viriditas is not merely biological. For Hildegard, it is the signature of the divine Word in creation. Every act of growth, every moment of flourishing, every instance of creativity is an expression of the Logos at work. The greening of the world is the speech of God made visible.
Hildegard sees the Incarnation as the supreme act of viriditas: God entering the material world from within, greening it at the root. Christ is the "greenest branch" — the one in whom divine life flows most fully into creation.
When viriditas fails — when things dry out, wither, or harden — Hildegard sees not merely physical decay but a spiritual condition. Sin is desiccation: the loss of the moisture of grace. Healing is re-greening: the restoration of the divine vitality that makes things live.
The Word is living, being, spirit, all verdant greening, all creativity. — Hildegard of Bingen, Scivias
Viriditas offers a vision of the world that is neither secular nor escapist. The material world is not a trap to be fled but a garden to be tended — sustained by divine energy and responsive to human care. Hildegard insists that the body, the senses, and the natural world are not obstacles to God but bearers of God's presence.
In an age of ecological anxiety, Hildegard's concept of viriditas speaks with renewed force. Creation is not inert matter but a living whole, and its flourishing depends on its connection to the divine source from which all life flows.
